Commitment to Sustainable Tourism Development

The Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters Association (MLOA) recognizes Sustainable Tourism Development as a vital concept for effective management of businesses in the resource based tourism industry. The MLOA is committed to developing and sustaining a strong and stable resource based tourism industry in Manitoba that offers the highest quality and diversity of outdoor attractions, vacations and adventures.

Sustainable Tourism Development Principles

As resource based tourism operators and outfitters, we believe that we can contribute significantly to Sustainable Tourism Development. We are equally committed to:

  • Developing, operating and marketing tourism in a sustainable manner so that each will positively contribute and conserve our natural, cultural, social and historic environments.
  • Complying with local, national and international laws and regulations applicable to our tourism businesses.
  • Opposing and actively discouraging illegal, abusive or exploitative forms of tourism.
  • Promoting and practising responsible and sustainable use and enjoyment of our natural resources and wilderness areas.
  • Conserving our plants, animals, ecosystems and protected areas.
  • Reducing, minimizing and preventing any pollution, waste or negative impacts on the economy, environment, nature, social structures or local cultures.
  • Interacting, encouraging, partnering and cooperating with local communities, public sectors, national and local authorities, government, industry and other organizations to maximize and preserve the quality and sustainability of tourism destinations in Manitoba.

Benefits of Tourism

The MLOA recognizes that tourism can significantly and positively contribute to the viability of local economies and to strong economic growth. The benefits of tourism are diverse; visitors to Manitoba bring new dollars to our communities and province that in turn, generate new business, jobs and taxes; benefits that positively impact the quality of life for all Manitobans.

The resource based tourism industry generates millions of dollars of export revenue and economic activity each year in Manitoba. We have hundreds of destinations that compete among global markets and we continually strive to develop and strengthen our tourism industry. Tourism is the largest industry in the world; it holds tremendous potential for continued growth and economic benefits.

Together, we can position Manitoba and its resource based tourism destinations among the top places to visit, while offering the very best of nature and ensuring of sustainability for tomorrow.
